Skin rejuvenation

Centre Aisthesis
and Lasermèdic are two centres situated in the Clínica Tres Torres de Barcelona, specialising in Dermatology, Skin Oncology, Plastic Surgery and Anti-Aging Medicine. The clinic has one of the first laser platforms in Europe. Working at the clinic are professionals specialising in Dermatology, Plastic Surgery and Medical and Surgical Laser Treatment, who are dedicated to solving and treating different dermatological and aesthetic problems.

What exactly is skin rejuvenation, Dr. Brualla?
Skin rejuvenation covers a series of aesthetic techniques directed towards improving and softening the effects of aging and exposure to the sun on the skin. There are two different directions in skin rejuvenation: (1) Ablative and surgical skin rejuvenation, which employs techniques that require more extensive recovery and significant post-operative care. This group includes: surgical face lift, blepharoplasty (eye lid lift surgery), liposuction, and breast enhancement and reduction, which are among the most frequent, and CO2/Erbium YAG laser resurfacing techniques; and (2) Non-ablative skin rejuvenation, in which non-surgical techniques are used that allow patients to combine work and daily life without a recovery period, leading to spectacular results.

Which treatments are used in non-ablative skin rejuvenation?
We have a laser platform and other light sources that cover all treatments currently available and approved by the Spanish and American Dermatology and Plastic Surgery Societies. The treatments include laser equipment and other light sources, such as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light to treat aged skin), LEDs (Light Emitting Diode to encourage healthy skin), radiofrequency, pulsed dye laser (for redness of the skin, neckline, etc.), NdYAG laser along with esclerotherapy (for varicose veins), and laser hair removal. These treatments are normally carried out in three to six sessions, one month apart, and are often combined together with better results.

We are also able to combine very effective dermocosmetic techniques, such as the VISTABEL wrinkle removal treatment, the use of fillers (for lips, deep lines and furrows known as nasolabial folds), skin peeling, microdermabrasion, treatment for acne and acne scars, and medical and surgical treatment for baldness. The common factor in all these and other techniques are that they are largely non-aggressive and highly efficient, which means they can be combined with daily life.

What new developments can you let us know about for this year?
One of the new procedures that we have incorporated consists of two pieces of fractional laser equipment for treating wrinkles, scars, skin stains and so on. Between three and six sessions are given four weeks apart, either alone or combined with the use of other equipment. There is no recovery period, which allows patients to continue their normal working life as usual with spectacular results. Another system is radiofrequency for facial rejuvenation (non-surgical face lift, eye lid lift, crow?s feet, etc.) and all over skin rejuvenation (we have incorporated equipment for skin flaccidity). One session is carried out on the face and between three and six sessions on the body (including the buttocks, arms, abdomen and neck). This improves skin firmness and encourages the formation of new collagen in the treated areas. There is a technological variety which allows laser treatments and other light sources to be combined in different sessions, but the best results are only achieved when combined with the best equipment and good medical experts.

Have you anything you would like to add, Dr. Brualla?
Whenever you are seeking reliable scientific dermatological advice you should approach your dermatologist and plastic surgeon who will inform you as to the treatments available and their indications and contra-indications, as well as other therapeutic options and the best aesthetic option.
